Oil Level in Produced Water

  • Complies with ASTM D7066, EPA 413.2 & 418.1
  • Compares with EPA 1664
  • Detect levels as low as 0.1 mg/L
  • Unlike UV, measures aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons

As offshore oil wells age, the increase of produced water challenges wastewater treatment systems. In order to ensure oil levels in the water are under the regulatory limit, it is important to do regular testing. Infrared analysis has been used for off-shore oil in water measurements for over 50 years. Infrared is an accepted oil content measurement as it is least affected by changes in produced water composition. EPA 413.2 & 418.1 are infrared methods for measuring oil & grease using now-banned Freon to extract the hydrocarbons from the effluent.  EPA 1664, using hexane as the extraction solvent and gravimetric analysis is now the standard method, replacing the Freon methods.  This gravimetric procedure requires a skilled laboratory technician, is costly and a time and equipment intensive process.  The InfraCal 2 Analyzers are the petroleum industry standard for the field measurement of oil and grease and total petroleum hydrocarbons due to its reputation for excellent correlation with EPA 1664 results.

The InfraCal 2 Analyzers give results under 15 minutes and have a reputation for the rugged durability required in the off-shore environment. The sampling procedure requires a few simple steps that can be performed by non-technical personnel. The water is mixed with the extraction solvent, shaken, and then presented to the InfraCal Analyzer for measurement.

The InfraCal 2 TOG/TPH Analyzers are capable of sub-ppm measurements to help ensure your upstream or downstream wastewater complies with discharge permits and avoid potentially-costly fines.  This updated version of the original InfraCal currently used worldwide for oil in water and soil analysis now has increased sensitivity, can store multiple calibrations,  has password protection on calibrations and instrument settings, a multi-language touchscreen user interface and internal data storage.  Data can be exported via USB directly to a PC or to a flash drive.

There are over 4,000 InfraCal Analyzers in operation around the world measuring the oil and grease levels in produced water on drilling platforms, oil content in FRAC water, hydrocarbons in wastewater effluents from refineries, and TPH in soil at remediation sites.
